Computer Woes Over Again – New Laptop Is Here!

Got my new laptop yesterday  (it’s Asus G750JM), and it’s very lovely 😀 Very quiet and cool to the touch even after hours of usage, and the best monitor of any of my old laptops ever. The keyboard also feels better than in my last one. It even has one empty hard drive bay, and one empty memory slot 😀 Thank you Mom for the wonderful gift!

The only problem was Asus Splendid thingy which turned colors very warm, orangy but once I figured out that was what was causing it and uninstalled it, colors are now normal 😀

I’m going to install the new hard drive I bought just a few months ago for the old laptop into the spare slot in this new one, but run into a problem with the screws in the old laptop’s hard drive bay thingy. Just need to get them unstuck – may need to buy new screwdrivers (my old ones I think aren’t sharp enough anymore) and/or go with it somewhere with the proper tools to get them unstuck.

Computer Woes Update – New Laptop Ordered

We ordered a new laptop yesterday; it’ll take up to 3 days for them to deliver it so maybe I’ll get it tomorrow but more likely after the weekend.

Until I get the new laptop, there won’t be any screencap uploads – this laptop can’t handle capping anymore, or things like sorting lots of photos/caps or programs such as Photoshop without over-heating. Right now I’m limited to light stuff like browsing, online banking and e-mail.

Computer Woes – Over-heating

Looks like my laptop has maybe started over-heating :( It shut down on its own in the middle of everything twice yesterday and was, in my opinion, a lot hotter to touch than normal.

It’s just over 5 years old, the hard drive went last year so maybe it’s time for a new one. Especially since Mom promised to buy for my 40th birthday (which was in last November, but due to reasons like them travelling abroad, Christmas craziness in the shops and then Mom being more or less ill all of January, haven’t gotten my big birthday present yet) something big expensive like an iPad, a new television or even an oven (all things I’d love to have or switch out for better ones but things I don’t actually need), I think I might choose a new computer because I need a computer in all possible cases and then it can be a more expensive and efficient one than what I myself could get. But I’m going to look into ways to fix the over-heating first (it’s not the fan outlets, at least on the outside – have to open up the bottom but I did clean it all just a while back, when the hard drive went). And even if it is fixable, maybe I’ll still go with buying a one anyway because this one is getting old.

All this just to say that if I disappear for a while, computer problems are the reason and I’ll be back ASAP.

Computer Woes

Having problems with Windows 8 – it simply won’t load at all. Good thing I also routinely run Linux Mint, and I’m almost on there more than Windows these days. Photoshop and and like 2 other programs I need a few times a week I haven’t been able to replace with Linux ones, but even so I’m terribly tempted to ditch Windows for good this time. Apparently I could run those 3 Windows programs via a virtual machine in Linux – I’ve done this on the Windows side before, use a virtual machine and an OS on it, so it’s not totally new to me, but it’s been a while and never done it in Linux.

I’ve also been wanting to buy a bigger hard drive for my laptop for months now but for financial reasons haven’t been able to make it happen. I don’t think it’s failing, I think it’s just Windows, but I’m not sure and I’d like a bigger drive and the Linux partition is growing too small anyway. Propably make it a priority now, having to re-install operating systems, to get that new hard drive. Never bought a laptop hard drive before – have to study that, so I that I don’t get one that isn’t compatible with my laptop :/

Linux should continue working OK and I should be able to continue pretty much normal, but if I do disappear for a while, computer problems are the reason.

Monitor & Sleeplessness

In case you’ve noticed & wondered why, I haven’t been posting much anything latelythat needs weeding out the bad caps in the last several weeks, or wallpapers/icons at all. The reason is:

My 6 year old main monitor – which is a big external one, and the one I solelydo all work on everything on because it’s comfortable to work on for hours at/with unlike the laptop monitor – broke down about a month and a bit ago, and I bought a new one pretty much right away – HD, widescreen, 1920×1080 native resolution Acer monitor. Unfortunately, my trusty but also 6 years old Spyder (it’s so old, it’s not even called Spyder but ColorPlus) can’t calibrate it at all – its technology is too ancient. I couldn’t afford to buy the current generation Spyder4Pro until this week, which I did today and I can’t wait to for it to arrive so I can get back to normal as far as computer stuff goes. I tried but for the life of me, just like the old monitor, I can’t calibrate the new monitor manually at all to use comfortably for anything more than about 15 minutes a time without straining my eyes – it’s just way too bright. Graphics work is out of the question, everything looks too faded. So, it’ll have to wait a proper calibration with the Spyder. Side note: weirdly though, it took me about two days to get used to the widescreen dimensions of it and now it feels more natural than any other monitor I’ve ever used before even though I haven’t used it that much yet.

In health stuff, my Thyroxin dosage was increased from 75mikrog to 100mikrog a day – all went well while I took 4 pills (4x 25mikrog) because I had just started the damn bottle so I of course wanted to use them all up, and only then start the new prescription bottle which is the same dosage but in one single pill (1x 100mikrog). I don’t know if it’s the 100mikrog pill or what, but I started taking it two weeks ago, and I haven’t been sleeping well since then :( It’s like I’m half awake, half asleep when I sleep and I can’t say for sure if I slept at all. End result, I’ve been feeling kind of off and listless, not wanting to do much of anything. Including computer stuff.

I had to go the dentist today, and the sleep thing has gotten so bad, last night I took one of those mild sleeping aid pills I have left over from last year’s fiasco with Questran and Triptyl to help me fall asleep, because I knew if I didn’t chances were I’d be awake most/all of the night and finally fall asleep like around 5-7am and be just too exhausted to go to the dentist. And it worked – it was the second night of honest to god honest sleep I’d gotten in two weeks. The other one was last week, when I finally got so exhausted after about of week of that half awake/half asleep/was I sleep at all? thing that finally actually slept.

If this sleep thing doesn’t let up, I’ll have to start looking into it. I’ve had bad spells before, so I’m not quite worried yet – just bloody annoyed! Particularly because whatever sleep I ever do get, is always accompanied by dreams. So the quality of sleep isn’t as good, or  normal, as it could be.

Bluray-Rom Fail

Looks like my Bluray-rom is failing :( It doesn’t read most CD/DVD/Bluray discs anymore, and the ones that it does read, it takes a longer than usually and with noise :(

I dug up my old X-Box360 HD DVD player from storage, which thankfully still works okay so at least I’m not shit out of luck when it comes to playing/ripping CDs and DVDs. I’m only shit out of luck when it comes the Bluray discs though. Good thing I have most of my Bluray discs backed up on external hard drives, but until I can afford to buy an external Bluray player (which won’t happen until I get a job or the prices come down a lot)… it does present a problem for all new Bluray movies/tv series I might want to rent/buy/get from the library and watch in the meantime. Oh, and I won’t be burning any DVDs either, assumably. Haven’t tested that yet.

Luckily it’s only the Bluray-rom hardware. I can still watch and play with Blurays on my hard drive like normal :)

Why is it that they can’t make CD/DVD and now Bluray-roms that doesn’t stop working after a year or two? I’ve had problems with all the CD/DVD-roms in all my computers, resulting in me buy external ones when the one that came with the computer stopped working, and I had hoped Bluray-rom would be different. I guess not.

Admin announcement

As some of you know, my laptop broke about 3 weeks ago now, and I today ordered a new one. The delivery time is 2-10 working days, so I’ll hope to be back online home again no later than the 18th – hopefully much sooner!
